New standards should simplify purchasing decisions, trade group claims.
April 19 – Are you confused by technical specifications? The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) knows you probably are, and wants to make your life easier.
Potential buyers of subwoofers may have an easier time of it, thanks to action taken yesterday by the trade group's Audio Systems Committee, which voted to adopt a new standard method of measurement for subwoofers. The new standards should make comparisons of similar products a straightforward procedure, rather than an exercise in head-scratching, as well as creating "a level playing field for manufacturers," according to committee member Charlie Hughes.
"CEA-2010," as the new standard is called, was two years in development, and ensures that all audio manufacturers who belong to the trade association will apply the "same test procedures to produce maximum output," said CEA vice president of technology Brian Markwalter. It also ensures that consumers will be making "apples-to-apples" comparisons when purchasing powered subs, he stated.
