LG launching HD DVD and Blu-ray combi player as early as February
Many of you reading this will doubtless have heard LG's big announcement ahead of the current Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas stating that the company is intending to launch the world's first HD DVD/Blu-ray combi deck at some point in 2007. Well, now the world's had chance to actually see the player on show, and a few more facts about it have emerged. So here's what we sort of know (so much as you can ever really know anything from a company as prone to changing its mind as LG often appears to be!).
The multi-format player seems to currently be calling itself a 'Super Multi Blue Player', with its model number being the rather more succinct BH100. It's rumoured to be launching in the US via such mass outlets as Best Buy and Circuit City as early as the first week of February, and it's likely to cost in the region of $1,199. This would translate to a pretty decent price of £700-£800 in the UK using normal exchange rules, but of course, the AV world being as it is we wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't defy normal economic principles and come in at around £1200!
The player is supposedly able to output 1080p at, surprisingly, both the key 24 and 30 frame per second options, though apparently the HDMI terminal the deck carries is only a 1.2, not a 1.3 affair.
The deck also has 5.1-channel analogue audio outputs, and according to the spec sheets doing the rounds at the show it will handle the Dolby Digital True HD and DTS-HD audio formats.
Perhaps inevitably this dual player - which was actually around in prototype form over a year ago before LG mysteriously backtracked from its dual-format interest and pledged allegiance exclusively to the Blu-ray club - does have a limitation or two. It can't play CDs, for starters, and also can't access some of the advanced features on HD DVD discs, such as picture in picture commentaries and bookmark sharing.
Quite what impact if any the seemingly definite launch of this multi-format deck will have on the HD DVD/Blu-ray format war is still open to debate. But provided the deck's limitations turn out to only affect features rather than its HD picture performance, it could certainly do wonders for the HD disc business as a whole. Let's just hope LG doesn't change its mind about releasing the deck at the 11th hour...
